Interesting post. Thank you. What’s your view on ‘national’ channels - like the BBC in the UK? It’s becoming less popular because of its perceived bias, but presumably, if they can ever truly be impartial, media like this should have an increasingly important role to play.
I'd really have to look at the specific dynamics of the "national channels" - particularly where audiences in the UK are spending their time. But it wouldn't surprise me if BBC News ends up playing a similar role in media consolidation as The NY Times. When you have one central news organization that dominates national mindshare (and potentially subscription dollars/pounds) it potentially crowds out other national outlets -- as the micro-culture rises. Something to look into for sure!
BBC is funded by the tax payer. I don’t know how US NPr for eg is. The problem here is that the BBC has become too liberal for many and they’re switching off. People feel it isn’t impartial and has political leanings. I wonder if the days of truly independent media are over. Will they all have some sort of leaning? Maybe it was naive to think they wouldn’t…to be continued
